Meta receives the third largest GDPR breach fine in history

Meta has been fined €265 million by the Irish Data Protection Authority (DPC) following repeated breaches of the privacy of EEA citizens. On November 28, the supervisory authority in Ireland imposed the third largest fine in the history of the European Union following GDPR violations, and in particular, the violation of Article 25 of the GDPR, failure to implement adequate technical and organizational measures.

The data was found on a website for hackers and included names, Facebook IDs, phone numbers, locations, birthdates, and email addresses of people from more than 100 countries, according to the reports.

This is an unexpected fine since the Irish supervisory authority is not known as a stiff-hand GDPR enforcer.

As part of the GDPR, every business must ensure that its customer's data is well protected, and all technical and organizational measures must be implemented over the business' website or platform.
