Italy DPA to Ban Use of Facial Recognition

Following various Data Protection Authorities (DPA) decisions, Italy has banned using facial recognition and 'smart glasses' (November 14, 2022).

Not long ago, various supervisory authorities in the Union imposed heavy fines on CLEARVIEW AI for the infringing use of facial recognition technology.

The Italian supervisory authority has now determined that any use of facial recognition systems that use biometric data will no longer be allowed until a specific law is adopted or at least until the end of next year.

The only use is when such technologies play a role in judicial investigations or the fight against crime. Under European and Italian law, processing personal data by public bodies using video devices is generally permitted on the grounds of public interest and when related to the activities of public authorities.

The agency responded to steps taken in the city of Lecce (as well as Tuscany and Arezzo), where authorities said they would begin using technology based on facial recognition.
